Police rescue baby from being sold

Safe and sound: The mother and her newborn at the Sarawak General Hospital

KUCHING: Swift action by the police here foiled an attempt by a group to sell a baby.

Acting on a tip-off, police roped in the individuals and rescued the baby girl.

ASP Abdul Razak Abdul Wahab led a team to a coffeeshop in MJC Batu Kawah at around 6am yesterday and nabbed a 51-year-old man.

The suspect from Jalan Pisang Barat is believed to be looking for potential buyers at the time. He had an Indonesian passport on him

The team then went to a snooker centre in Jalan Batu Kawah where they found three women and a newborn baby.

The women were aged between 19 and 28.

“We discovered documents related to the baby but none of the women is the mother.

“We questioned them and managed to locate the baby’s mother,” said a police spokesman.

Police then went to a shophouse in Batu Kawah and found the baby’s mother, who is a 27-year-old Indonesian, on the third floor.

The passport found on the man earlier belonged to the mother.

The baby was later brought to the Sarawak General Hospital for check-up and found to be healthy.

The suspects, including the baby’s mother, were questioned before being remanded.

State CID chief SAC Zulkifli Hassan confirmed the case, and he said the male suspect was trying to offload the baby for a sum of RM17,000.
