The new Sarawak police commissioner, Mohamad Salleh, has pledged to press on and intensify the “Ops Cantas Kenyalang”, an operation launched in April to combat crime in the state, in particular gangsterism.
Accepting the duty as the State’s 18th state commissioner of police yesterday, Mohamad said that he would meet department heads and 27 district police chiefs to work out policing strategies to fight gangsterism in the State.
He said that although Ops Cantas Kenyalang had borne fruit with the arrests of 30 gang leaders and their lieutenants, there would be no let-up in the operations to ensure that the state is free of gangterism.
“There shall be no compromise in our efforts to eliminate gangsterism in Sarawak…to me, it’s zero tolerance.
“I therefore call on members of the public to channel information to assist the police in weeding out gangster activities,” he told reporters after the handing over of duties here.
Mohamad, the former Selangor deputy police chief, took over from Datuk Abdul Rahman Hussin, who was the acting state police commissioner following the retirement of Datuk Talib Jamal in September.
Of the 30 arrested under the Emergency Ordinance 1969, 14 are being detained at Simpang Renggam in Johor, one in Kamunting detention camp in Perak while eight were placed under the Restricted Residence Act.
Six more are still under remand for 60 days under Section 3 (1) of the Ordinance.
On claims that police officers were colluding with gangs, Mohamad said that the public should come forward with information if there were black sheep in the force and not merely make claims.
“We can’t take action based merely on talk and claims because we don’t know who is involved. I hope that those with information will come and see us.
“If they are worried that the information might leak, they can convey it to the Special Branch or to me personally,” he said.
He also called on the media to play their role and not to make baseless reports or sensationalise certain issues.
